Looking back on Steve Yzerman's tenure as the team's general manager, he has never been one to shy away from contract buyouts.

As the highly anticipated NHL off-season approaches, one noteworthy contract Steve Yzerman is looking to potentially scrap is Red Wings defenseman Justin Holl. With a tight budget already restricting important signings, Yzerman will look to create as much relief as he possibly can on the over crowded Red Wings blue line. The buyout period is expected to start just 48 hours after the Stanley Cup final.
Defenseman Justin Holl is a viable buyout candidate with two years remaining on his contract at $3.4 million per season. Buying out Holl would cost the Red Wings $1.13 million against the cap and in actual salary in each of the next four seasons, according to capfriendly.com. It would trim $2 million off their cap in each of the next two seasons.Yzerman signed Holl to a three-year, $10.2 million deal on July 1, 2023, due to the team's need for a right-shooting defenseman.

With Holl's current contract, it would make Yzerman's job extremely difficult concerning a trade that would provide value to the team. Holl's performance during the regular season was mediocre at best, making him an ideal buyout candidate. Holl had zero goals and only notched five assists during the regular season with a -8 rating.
Could we see a buyout happening very soon? Only time will tell.
