The Detroit Red Wings could switch up their goalie rotation next season, and roll with three netminders, as some names available are Dustin Tokarski and Semyon Varlamov.

The Detroit Red Wings could fill a void in the crease, as they could find a third-string goalie in order to relieve goalies Cam Talbot and John Gibson in the case their overworked or injured.
A three-goalie rotation hasn't been commonplace in the NHL until recently, as we've seen teams choose different methods of protecting the crease. Lalonde utilized the system with Alex Lyon, Ville Husso, and James Reimer in place during his tenure.
Alex Lyon would be underutilized, while Husso and Reimer would share the crease, delivering disappointing results. But for 2025-26, there's a new status quo, and a new goalie coach in Michael Leighton.
There remain goalies available for the third string, but are they worth a look?
Louis Domingue has found success as a third goalie with the New York Rangers recently. He started 12 NHL games, and delivered a 6-5-0 record, with a 2.86 GAA, and a .916 save percentage.
The former Arizona Coyotes draft pick has found usefulness during his short stint in Pittsburgh in 2021-2022, starting six playoff games, with a 3.65 GAA.
Bonus: he can bake.

Semyon Varlamov

Semyon Varlamov would be an ideal third goalie given his recent health struggles and his loss of the starting role in New York. Varlamov has played for the Islanders for the last several seasons, and with the addition of Marcus Hogberg and David Rittich, it appears Varlamov's time on Long Island may be at an end. Varlamov's $2.75 million cap hit comes cheap, and as a 37-year-old netminder can still produce.
28-21-9, 2.68 GAA, and a .912 save percentage.
35-year-old netminder, Tokarski, could be a positive influence in the locker room, and in the net as a third-stringer. He played six games for the Canes this season
He finished the year in Carolina with a 4-2-0 record, 2.18 GAA, and a .912 save percentage.
Tokarski is a career AHLer, but has proven he's capable of much more in the NHL. He could also be a mentor for players like Sebastian Cossa, and could be a good substitute in the case of injuries.
