Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman makes offensive hand gesture during NHL draft interview
GM Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings is fed up, and we saw a controversial hand gesture during interviews after the 2025 NHL Draft, where he selected Carter Bear 13th overall.
The Detroit
Red Wings completed what could be considered a successful NHL Draft this year. In addition to selecting Carter Bear, they made seven picks.
They also traded for veteran goalie
John Gibson, who will be the new starter in Detroit, giving them some meaningful talent in the crease.
During an interview, after all was said and done, Yzerman let his emotions get the best of him.
In a word, he used a controversial "gesture" which lacked the professionalism of the GM position. It's going to get a lot of usage on "X" in the future as a gif used in reaction by Red Wings fans, for better or worse.
This was an alarming response to well-meaning questions from the Detroit media, which suggests that Yzerman is fed up with his bona fides as a GM being questioned.
Nearly a decade into his tenure, there has been no major playoff run, and he has trailed behind his Atlantic Division counterparts like the Florida Panthers.
Now, with news of no buyouts of
Justin Holl or
Erik Gustafsson on the horizon and the Red Wings adding very few upgrades, if any, you question his thought process.
Instead of turning up the heat in the Atlantic, he continues to let it simmer and come to a boil.
A strategy that has placed them just above the New York Rangers in the East.
We're not sure it's good enough to improve the team significantly, considering the kind of talent he's passed up this week.
