If theDetroit Red Wings and Steve Yzerman didn't already trade for Alex DeBrincat, they could draft another player whose game is similar to DeBrincat, with Cameron Schmidt, who is "undersized" but plays a punishing game, and can score goals.
The Detroit Red Wings could find a smaller, "undersized" prospect,
Cameron Schmidt, as a high draft pick in the 1st-round if he's available. Schmidt is an intriguing option for the Red Wings, like DeBrincat, he's a 40-goal scorer with the WHL's Vancouver Giants and tallied 78 points in 61 games.
Schmidt reminds you of a player like Cole Caulfield with his size, as he's only 5'7" and 157 pounds. A frame that could use some muscle before makes the jump to the NHL for sure.
As we talked about earlier, his size is his advantage, as he uses it to sneak into the circle and work his way through opponents, going unnoticed. It's not even a factor of his size, but the lack of it working unconventionally.
He utilizes his sneakiness to capitalize on juicy rebounds left by goaltenders, meaning he's not afraid to get in the dirty areas in front of the net and fight for a puck. He is capable of using a loose puck to create breakaways to score, and his reach is something extraordinary for someone his size.
While you're wondering about his size, he's already proven it's a non-factor.
Schmidt's path to the NHL is unconventional, and could be like any path begins, it could be one more year in the WHL, and then making the jump in 2027-2028.
Schmidt is an unconventional choice in the 1st-round, and sometimes those are the best to make.
Tankathon projects him to go at 31st overall, taken by the Calgary Flames, but we all know the draft itself is unpredictable.
