The Detroit Red Wings had yet another disappointing season in the end, yet again coming up short on a playoff spot, coming so close for the second year in a row. The Red Wings and the Yzerplan will have to do some soul searching over the summer, and it looks like that soul searching has already started, as it's been reported by NHL Insider David Pagnotta from The Fourth Period that Vladimir Tarasenko may be moved by Detroit.
Tarasenko was signed in last year's free agency to a two-year contract after he was traded from the Ottawa Senators to the Florida Panthers as a rental, where he won his second Stanley Cup in his career. Tarasenko is one of the veteran pieces on the Red Wings at 33 years old.
Vladimir tallied 11 goals and 22 assists for Detroit last season, adding up to 33 points in 80 games. Tarasenko, overall, has had trouble staying healthy for a full season, having only one full 82-game season played in his career with the Blues.
Tarasenko would be a valuable piece to a team who is already contending and is in a playoff spot, unlike Detroit, as he doesn't really fit the timeline. Not only does he not fit the timeline, he also doesn't fit the mold quite like other veteran additions, like
Patrick Kane.
Luckily, Tarasenko wasn't much of a big risk, as he's only making $4.75 million AAV. His contract won't be too difficult to move, too, so Detroit most likely won't have to retain anything in the deal they make if they do choose to trade him.
With what the Red Wings were trying to build coming into this year, the signing made sense, but now, it doesn't. They should try to get something for him since he's on the final year of his contract before he walks for free.
