The Detroit Red Wings could reignite their offense if they reunite former Chicago Blackhawks teammates, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, in Hockeytown.
While this proposition could seem like blasphemy, it could be a turning point for the Red Wings in the NHL. As a team whose struggled the past nine seasons, there are worse ideas out there.
Toews and Kane won three Stanley Cups together and had chemistry that couldn't be matched in the NHL.
If GM Steve Yzerman is serious about winning, he could sign Toews, who could make a triumphant return to the NHL after two seasons away from play in the best hockey league in the world.
Toews shouldn't have to be sold on much, considering Kane has already put forth an idea on returning to the Red Wings next season.
With $21 million in cap space, of course, the logic should be to pursue top free agents in the NHL.
And with a bidding war about ot occur for
Mitch Marner, other free agents deserve Yzerman's attention. I'd argue that includes
Brock Boeser and Jonathan Toews.
Toews could add some bite to the offense and scoring depth on a team that's been in the thrall of scarcity lately.
Scarcity in scoring, in offense, and in good defense.
Toews would be a great first step in adding more leadership in the locker room and scoring depth.
With the announcement of his return, Toews was added to TSN's top-50 free-agents list in the NHL.
It's difficult to tell what Toews and agent Pat Brisson would ask for in compensation, but his last contract with Chicago ended at $10.5 million AAV.
