Detroit Red Wings miss out on low-cost opportunity to acquire promsing young Ducks talent
The Philadelphia Flyers acquired Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks, meaning that the Detroit Red Wings have lost out on a reported trade target.
While the Detroit Red Wings are reportedly going to be in on several players this summer, one player has now been taken off their list of options that they were allegedly considering.
The Anaheim Ducks traded forward Trevor Zegras, who had been previously linked to the Red Wings, to the Philadelphia Flyers earlier today.
In return, the Flyers sent forward
Ryan Poehling, 2025 45th overall pick, and the 2026 4th round pick to the Ducks.
Zegras is the former 9th overall pick of the Ducks in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, and he's spent the last 5 years with the organization. Originally thought of as one of their building block forwards and a foundational piece, things didn't come together the way that they had hoped.
GM Pat Verbeek had apparently seen enough, and decided to cut ties with him by sending him to the Flyers.
He had 32 points (12G, 20A) in 57 games this year with the Ducks, which included a 3-game suspension after a blindside hit to the head of
Michael Rasmussen during a game in late February.
Zegras was initially unpenalized on the play, but after a review from the NHL Department of Player Safety, the decision was made to ban him for 3 games.
In his career, Zegras has 186 points (67G, 119A).
The Red Wings were reportedly linked to Zegras given the friendship between GM Steve Yzerman and his former Detroit teammate Verbeek, but now he'll have to explore different options for roster upgrades.
