Ahead of tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan updated us on the condition of defenseman Simon Edvinsson.

Tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins was a backdrop to the update on the team's top-four defenseman, Simon Edvinsson.
Fans eagerly await Edvinsson's return to the ice, as he's been a key player in the team's rebuild. The defenseman had a solid season in 2024-25, playing 78 games for the Red Wings and scoring a career high 31 points (7-24).
While Edvinsson is one player who is out of the lineup due to injury issues (lower-body), the team remains without offseason signing James Van Riemsdyk due to a family issue.
Nate Danielson was another player who was added to the injury list, as it continues to grow exponentially.

Todd McLellan's Update on Simon Edvinsson's Status

According to McLellan, Edvinsson has been practicing with the team, but he hasn't been able to be a full participant in team drills.
"We'll see how his practice went today, he was fully involved, It wasn't a pregame stake, a lot of walk-through, not a lot of action,» McLellan explained «Obviously I'm not out there to see it, but we'll get an update, he's getting close opening night, I don't see any reason why he isn't playing, and we'll make smart decisions with him this week.»

The Red Wings head coach expects Edvinsson to be out of the lineup when the team takes on the Penguins tonight and the Blackhawks in the next exhibition game on Tuesday.
Though the 22-year-old forward hasn't been ruled out of competition against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, it is promising news for fans.
There's always an exception, though; if he isn't healthy enough to return to the ice, the team could hold him out.
We hope for the best, as the team has Jacob Bernard-Docker in RD2 according to DailyFaceOff.
This could just be for the remainder of the time the Swedish defenseman is out of the lineup.
