Detroit Red Wings set to part ways with two defensemen, per report
The Detroit Red Wings missed the playoffs once again this season and are poised for roster changes in the offseason.
The team, backed by GM Steve Yzerman plans to bolster its lineup at forward, defense, and goaltending.
Some players may not return, with NHL analyst
Max Bultman of The Athletic revealing that defenseman
William Lagesson is unlikely to stay.
«Lagesson played just seven games for Detroit this season,» Bultman noted. «With limited usage and potential new additions pushing Gustafsson and/or Holl into depth roles, it's tough to see him returning.»
Lagesson signed a one-year, $775,000 contract last offseason and was serving as a depth defenseman. The 29-year-old Swede recorded one assist in seven games this season and has 12 assists in 107 career NHL games. If not re-signed, he may seek a team offering a more regular role.
Red Wings GM Eyes Aggressive Offseason
Detroit's playoff drought extended to nine seasons, prompting general manager Steve Yzerman to consider bold moves or he may be
on the hot seat.
At his year-end press conference, Yzerman expressed openness to pursuing top talent.
«We'll look at any player who can help us in any role,» Yzerman said. «If there's a player worth investing in who wants to play in Detroit and fits our needs, we'll absolutely pursue them. We have a solid young core, and adding a prominent free agent is something we'd consider.»
With over $21 million in cap space, Detroit is set to target upgrades at forward, defense, or goaltending, making them a team to watch this offseason.
Bultman also revealed two other defensemen who might not return.
Justin Holl's $3.4 million cap hit is steep for a third-pair role, and a buyout costing $1.13 million annually for two years makes sense, he stated.
Jeff Petry was also named as a potential departure.
