The Detroit Red Wings are seeking a starting goaltender and could pursue a major trade to fill the gap, according to a proposed deal.

In a proposed blockbuster, Detroit would acquire Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson and a 2025 fifth-round pick (Edmonton's).
In exchange, Anaheim would receive goaltending prospect Sebastian Cossa, forward Jonatan Berggren, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2025 fourth-round pick (Tampa Bay's).
Gibson, with two years left on his eight-year, $51.2 million contract, would become Detroit's starting goaltender and give them the stability in goal that has yet to be seen for years.
Last season, the three-time NHL All-Star posted an 11-11-2 record, a 2.77 GAA, and a .912 SV%.
Meanwhile Anaheim would gain Cossa, a top goaltending prospect drafted 15th overall in 2021, who could pair with Lukas Dostal.
Berggren is a restricted free agent with 12 goals and 12 assists in 75 games last season and would add depth to the Ducks' bottom-six forwards.

Red Wings Prioritize Goaltending Upgrade

Detroit's nine-year playoff drought has been partly attributed to inconsistent goaltending.
At his year-end press conference, general manager Steve Yzerman emphasized the need for a reliable starter.
«We need better puck-stopping from our goaltender,» Yzerman stated.
Head coach Todd McLellan echoed this, saying, «Better goaltending is essential for us to become a true playoff team. It's not just on the goaltenders or the goalie coach-it's on everyone.»

While Detroit has Petr Mrazek and Cameron Talbot signed for next season, and Cossa could vie for a role, a trade for a starting netminder like Gibson could ultimately help lift the team.
With prospect Trey Augustine also in the pipeline, potentially surpassing Cossa, the Red Wings might be willing to part with the latter.
Gibson has been involved in trade rumors for quite some time, he has seen Dostal emerge as Anaheim's primary goaltender.
In March, Gibson expressed openness to a trade on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio.
«I leave that to my agent and focus on playing,» Gibson said. «I've been in rumors for years-it gets tiring. I just want to enjoy hockey.»

A trade for Gibson could give Detroit the goaltending stability they've lacked. Would you accept it?
