The real reason as to why Mason McTavish will likely end up traded by the Anaheim Ducks has been revealed.

Mason McTavish remains unsigned as we enter mid-August, a situation Ducks fans were hoping to avoid. Despite adding many talented young players to the team over the past years, McTavish is one of the best players in Anaheim, and seeing him leave the team due to contractual disputes would be a tough blow for the organization and fans.
In a new report, the real reason why a deal hasn't been reached was confirmed.

Why McTavish Will Get Traded Soon

Pat Verbeek isn't a GM who often hands out long-term deals. As we saw in past years, it often leads to trades, like it happened with Trevor Zegras.
He ended up changing teams this summer: he's now in Philadelphia after a trade involving Ryan Poehling and a second-round pick.
Elliotte Friedman opened up on that aspect of Verbeek's strategy in an intervention on 32 Thoughts:
"Verbeek, he's careful. I don't think he wants to hand anybody money too quickly. If you want the money, you're going to have to earn it. I think if there's long-term extensions, they're at numbers that are very favorable to the Ducks, to the point where I'd be surprised. I would be shocked if they got long-term deals done at big numbers."

Jimmy Murphy mentioned that because McTavish wants a long-term deal, things could end swiftly for him in Anaheim:
"Pat Verbeek wants a bridge deal, (a) two to three-year deal. McTavish wants a longer deal; he wants more AAV than they're offering."

At some point, management must work to make their star players happy, something Anaheim has struggled with over the past years.
If McTavish, who could be the team's number two center for 10 or 15 years, wants a long-term deal, just give it to him. The consequences would be bigger for the team if he ends up leaving than if he were to sign a long-term deal, even if he suddenly stopped developing.
