Elliotte Friedman confirms a rift in Detroit between Dylan Larkin and Steve Yzerman
The NHL insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed details of the rift between Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings' captain Dylan Larkin in Detroit.
At the end of the season, players couldn't do what they had to do to get to the playoffs. At that time of the year, taking their game to the next level was crucial, no matter what the external circumstances were, and they didn't.
Team captain Dylan Larkin made
questionable comments in his end-of-season press conference, blaming Yzerman for his lack of action at the trade deadline and the tough schedule instead of taking accountability for the Red Wings' latest playoff miss.
"You look at the schedule, it's a lot of travel, a lot of games, a lot of coming and going, flying in, flying out. It's difficult, but you have to come up with wins. And especially in March, it was hard that we didn't do anything."
"And then I felt the group kind of- we didn't gain any momentum from the trade deadline, and guys were kind of down about it, so it'd be nice to add something and bring a little bit of a spark on the ice and maybe a morale boost as well."
True leadership is about showing the way, learning, and taking accountability.
All teams have tough schedules, and not all teams who made the playoffs made trade deadline acquisitions.
In a recent intervention on 32 Thoughts, Elliotte Friedman confirmed that Yzerman wasn't "too crazy" about the captain's comments:
If Larkin were to end up being available on the trade market, many teams are likely to call up Yzerman to inquire about him. He is one of the great centermen in the NHL, and with his affordable $8,700,000 AAV contract with six seasons left on it, he could bring a very interesting return to Detroit.
However, Yzerman would need to make sure he can replace him, which won't be an easy task.
