Four members of the Detroit Red Wings' defensive unit were deemed safe from being traded in the off-season, according to a new report.
Many changes will go down in Detroit over the coming months. Steve Yzerman, the Wings' President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, will have a lot to do to meet the needs of his team.
In fact, many trades could go down, with only a few members of the team deemed safe from being dealt this summer.
Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson
These two were the easy choices. Seider and Edvinsson are part of the team's long-term plans. Organizations know they need players like them to win in the NHL, and the Red Wings won't let them leave without a fight.
Edvinsson will be eligible to sign a contract extension in Detroit on July 1st, but he has another season left on his entry-level deal signed in 2023.
Last season, the 6'6", 22-year-old defenseman scored 31 points, including seven goals, in 78 games.
As for Seider, he agreed on the terms of a seven-year extension with the Wings last year, and is set to keep developing into an all-star NHL defenseman. He tallied 46 points, with eight goals, in 82 games.
Ben Chiarot and Albert Johansson
Chiarot enters the final year of his contract at 34 years old, and could accept a lower salary to remain in Detroit for the end of his career. He brings great defensive skills and physicality to the lineup, something that Yzerman would surely appreciate having on his team next season.
As for Johansson, the 24-year-old is a great defensive defenseman who adds a lot of depth to the Red Wings. As a restricted free agent, he will be eligible to sign offer sheets this summer, but it would be surprising to see a team go after him that way.
Parting ways with any of them would be a decision tough to understand for fans, unless the return is substantial.
