Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Olli Maatta has been sidelined due to an upper-body injury with his new team.
The Red Wings parted ways with Olli Maatta in a trade with the Utah Mammoth in 2024. The two-time Stanley Cup champion was dealt by Steve Yzerman after failing to register a single point with the Wings in the first seven games of the 2024-25 season for a third-round pick in the 2025 draft.
He ended up taking part in 70 games that year for Utah, where he scored 18 points, including two goals.
The 31-year-old left-handed defenseman, drafted 11th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2012, has scored only one point, an assist, in 16 games this season after he was placed on the IR.
Olli Maatta Gets Placed On IR By Utah Mammoth
A few days ago, it was announced that Maatta was retroactively placed on the Injured Reserve by the Mammoth as he deals with an upper-body injury.
The team also announced that they had called back up Kevin Rooney from the Tucson Roadrunners in the AHL but sent him back there a few days later.
After a solid start to the season, the Utah Mammoth has fallen in the standings, winning only two out of their last 10 games.
Twenty-seven games through the regular season, the team is currently 5th in the Central Division, tied with the Chicago Blackhawks at 27 points.
The team will be back in action on Tuesday night against the Anaheim Ducks, one of the most surprising teams in the NHL this season. Stay tuned for updates on former Wings defenseman Olli Maatta.
