For the 4th consecutive year, the Los Angeles Kings were defeated in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Edmonton Oilers.
This most recent defeat will likely be the most difficult and painful for the Kings, who not only had home-ice advantage over Edmonton for the 1st time but also had a 2-0 series lead; they also had a 3-1 lead in Game 4 before the Oilers stunned them with a 5-4 OT win.
Robitaille released the following statement minutes ago:
On behalf of the entire organization, I would like to thank Rob for his dedication to the LA Kings and the passion he brought to his role. Reaching this understanding wasn't easy and I appreciate Rob's partnership in always working toward what is best for the Kings.

Rob deserves a great deal of credit and respect for elevating us to where we are today. He has been an important part of the Kings and will always be appreciated for what he has meant to this franchise.

The move isn't surprising; after experiencing the same result 4 years straight and blowing a major advantage before the most recent loss, a change was needed.
Red Wings fans still remember Robitaille as being part of the additions made in that legendary summer of 2001 that also included trading for Dominik Hasek and signing Brett Hull.
That season culminated in the franchise's 10th Stanley Cup and the 1st in the playing careers of both Robitaille and Hasek; the club had a full 10 future Hall of Fame players and were led by Scotty Bowman behind the bench.
Part of Detroit's journey to the Cup included a victory over the hated Colorado Avalanche in the Conference Final, who featured Rob Blake on their blue line.
