Former Detroit Red Wings forward nominated for major NHL award
Former Red Wings forward David Perron, who is now with the playoff-bound divisional foe Ottawa Senators, has been nominated for a major NHL award.
One of the players that Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman decided against bringing back for this year was veteran David Perron, who had just come off a 2-year stint with the club.
Instead, he was given an offer he couldn't refuse from the divisional foe Ottawa Senators; they signed him to a 2-year pact with an AAV (average annual value) of $4 million.
He missed considerable time in what has been his 1st year with the Senators and also took time off to attend to a personal family matter after getting off to a considerably slow start with 0 points in his 1st 12 games.
But since his return to action, he's looked more like his old self. Since March 1, he has 12 points (8G, 4A) and has helped the Senators secure their 1st berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2017.
The Senators have officially made them their nominee for the Bill Masterton Trophy, given annually to the player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey; each team submits a nominee, who is then voted upon in a poll of the National Professional Hockey Writers Association.
It was hard trying to be with a new team. If I was with my old team, or maybe even St. Louis where you've been for years, you don't feel like you have to establish yourself in the locker room and the role you'll have to be effective. I was trying my best. People might think it's about point production or goal scoring, but it really isn't. It's being yourself in the locker room and having a game that you go out there and people respect what you do.
So far this year, Perron has 16 points (9G, 7A) in 40 games; he also scored against the Red Wings in his return to Little Caesars Arena late last month.
