Former NHL All-Star calls out Steve Yzerman
Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman is being discussed by former NHL All-Star forward John Scott, who is the latest former NHL player to offer his viewpoint on the rebuild.
It's now been 9 years without the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the Detroit Red Wings, the longest drought in team history.
Considering the team is about to celebrate their centennial year, having been founded in 1926, that's an eye-opening streak without playing playoff hockey.
But understandably, there is growing concern with the slow pace of the rebuild along with divisional foes like the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators who have lapped them and gotten back to the playoffs before they did.
It's especially troubling that the Canadiens went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021, finished dead last in the Atlantic Division for the next pair of years, and have returned to the playoffs - all while Detroit has yet to play playoff hockey since 2016.
Former NHL All-Star John Scott appeared to throw some snark toward the state of the Red Wings on his X account:
I actually think the Red Wings are super close to being a contender.
All they need is a goalie, better defensemen, and better forwards.
While Scott's comments drew some immediate pushback with mockery over his own NHL career, his viewpoint shouldn't be dismissed.
The Red Wings still need game-changing talent on their roster to be able to take the next step, and there's nothing wrong with that being said (especially by former NHL players).
