Former Detroit Red Wings goaltender is plotting revenge tonight in a Sunday Atlantic Division showdown in Little Caesars Arena with the Ottawa Senators.
On Sunday, an Atlantic Division tilt begins between the Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators. An unexpected revenge story will underpin the night, as former goaltender James Reimer will be guarding the crease for the Senators.
With a record of 29-16-4, the Detroit Red Wings are 2nd in the Atlantic Division and seek to stay in a playoff spot.
And the Senators, who have a road record of 11-10-2 on the road, are 8th and will look to upend the Red Wings. They will rely on former Red Wings goaltender James Reimer tonight.
The move comes after a stark loss to the Montreal Canadiens 6-5, as goalie Leevi Merilainen made 13 of 19 saves on Saturday.
Having Reimer as a netminder should provide some motivation to earn a win against his former team. A Red Wings team that failed to bring him back after a decent run in the winged wheel.
He had been through a messy situation at the start of the season, as he had a professional tryout with the Toronto Maple Leafs that didn't work out.
Instead of earning a contract with the team that drafted him. The Senators would be the team to give the 37-year-old a spot in their lineup, signing him to a 1-year, $850,000 contract per PuckPedia.
Goaltender James Reimer of the Ottawa Senators should have plenty of motivation to upset the Detroit Red Wings
The last time James Reimer played a full season for the Red Wings was during the 2023-24 season. He played 25 games that year, with a 11-8-2 record, 3.11 goals-against average, and a .904 save percentage.
This year, he's played only one game in the AHL with the Belleville Senators, netting a 6.05 GAA and a .786 save percentage. He joins a team with a collective save percentage of .865, the worst in the league.
Will he be true to form tonight against his former team? Or will he still be lagging behind, as we've seen in the AHL?
Reimer made his NHL debut in 2010 and has played 525 NHL games with a record of 225-187-65, with a 2.89 GAA, and a .910 save percentage.
