Derek Ryan has officially retired, and has called out the Edmonton Oilers on his way out in what seems to be a shot at management for mistreatment of the 38-year-old veteran.

As the 2025-26 NHL season quickly approaches, several players are taking this week to officially announce their departure from the game of hockey.
On Thursday, longtime goaltender Aaron Dell, who defied odds to make it to the big leagues, hung up his skates for good.
On Friday, Derek Ryan, who had a very similar career path to Dell, confirmed the same piece of news.
"From undrafted to playing 606 NHL regular-season games, congratulations to Derek Ryan on officially announcing his retirement from playing the game!"

- NHLPA
On his way out, he didn't mince his words regarding his true feelings towards the management in Edmonton.

Derek Ryan calls out Oilers management after retiring: "It was a little bitter for me"

'It was a little bitter for me just because of how things were handled with the new management, the somewhat new coaching staff and just kind of the brick work that I had laid with that group. The blood, sweat, and tears that I had given with that group in three and a half years, just to have it brushed under the rug, is pretty disappointing. I don't think it would have been that way if the management wouldn't have changed.'
