Major announcement involving a former Detroit Red Wings confirms his time in the NHL appears over
Former Red Wings forward Tomas Tatar, who was once thought to be a major part of the team's foundation, could soon see his NHL career come to an end.
Once thought to be a foundational piece for the Detroit Red Wings, ex-forward Tomas Tatar's NHL career could soon be coming to a close.
Per a new report from NHL Rumors,
Tatar could return overseas next year if he's unable to land an NHL contract, with EV Zug of the Swiss National League being specifically named.
Speaking with the Zuger Zeitung last weekend, EV Zug's manager Reto Klay acknowledged that Tatar is on a shortlist of players the team intends to target this offseason, one that also includes former NHL winger Dominik Kubalik. Zug has seven import players to sign for next season so they'll be casting a wide net to do so; Klay acknowledged that his shortlist currently consists of somewhere between 20 and 30 players.
Tatar's production, which included 7 years of scoring at least 20 goals, has taken a considerable downturn.
He split last year between the Colorado Avalanche and Seattle Kraken, scoring only 9 goals. This year with the Devils, his 2nd go around with the team, he has only 7 goals in 71 games; his ice time is also considerably down at barely 11 minutes per game.
Tatar had several productive years with the Red Wings, and even scored one of the final goals at Joe Louis Arena in 2017. But he was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights at the 2018 Trade Deadline in exchange for a 1st round draft pick that was used to select Joe Veleno (who was traded away last month after another underwhelming year of output).
He's since played for the Montreal Canadiens, Devils, Avalanche and Kraken; he has 496 points (227G, 269A) in 924 career games.
