Major turn of events involving a former Detroit Red Wings forward: A new all-time low

Dmitri Buchnikov will have an interesting teammate this year in the KHL.

Former Red Wings forward Daniel Sprong will be suiting up in the KHL with CSKA Moscow.

While the two have never been teammates until now, they share a common bond in Hockeytown.

Buchelnikov is one of the Red Wings' most promising prospects in Russia, and was drafted in the 2nd-round of the 2022 NHL Draft.

While Sprong had a short stint in the Detroit Red Wings organization as a skilled, efficient forward. Though he had his shortcomings, as a player who doesn't typically backcheck.

A reason for teams to discard the former journeyman in the NHL. Spring put up respectable numbers in the iconic winged wheel, playing 76 games and scoring 43 points (18-25).

And so it seems his leash has been cut, as last year he played 11 games for Sheldon Keefe's New Jersey Devils, but was unable to make an impact like he did in Detroit.

He'd play 11 games and score 2 points (2 assists).

His last contract paid him $975K over one year, and he wasn't able to sign a new deal with another NHL team during the offseason.

Sprong was originally drafted 46th overall in the 2nd-round of the 2015 NHL Draft.

There was hope he'd be able to stick around, despite his ability to score goals and be an efficient member of the Red Wings and Kraken on the ice, he was unable to take advantage of the opportunities afforded to him in Vancouver and New Jersey.

Now he'll have a chance to mentor Dmitri Buchelnikov and hunt for a Gagarin Cup.
