NHL insider David Pagnotta drops major update on Red Wings' first off-season move

The Detroit Red Wings are unhappy with the status quo it seems. Instead of waiting for July to hit, the team is already making moves with the coaching staff, as Todd McLellan isn't ready to accept defeat.

While he did finish 6th in the Atlantic, he did his best to turn the team around, finishing with a 39-35-8 record.

Instead of keeping what remains of Derek Lalonde's staff, we have to speculate that it could mean McLellan gets to choose his own staff to surround himself and Trent Yawney with in Detroit.

According to The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, we shouldn't expect an exact timeframe for this to happen, if it does.

Upon his arrival in Hockeytown, McLellan kicked the wings into gear, putting them on pace for a winning percentage of .816, and going 15-3-1 in their first 19 games with the coach.

Now, instead of settling in, he's not getting comfy; he'll have to figure out who to bring in during the offseason to turn them into a well-oiled machine.

Could former Edmonton Oilers Jay Woodcroft be the next person to fill out the staff in Detroit?

McLellan finished the 2024-2025 season with the Red Wings, with a record of 26-18-4 and a .583 percentage.

Imagine how well he'd do with his own people here. He has taken the San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, and Edmonton Oilers to the playoffs before; why not Detroit?
