NHL Insider Detroit Red Wings Linked t0 $92.8 Million Canucks Star

If GM Steve Yzerman has any sense, he'll need to make major moves in order to push the Red Wings into a competitive sphere in the NHL.

That would mean adding a top-six forward who could push the team into playoff territory. With $21 million in cap space, they should look to spend quite a sum in order to acquire someone like the Vancouver Canucks Elias Pettersson.

Pettersson's 2024-2025 wasn't only riddled with injuries, but a rift polarized the locker room, when he and J.T. Miller's controversy was circling the newswire weekly.

Tingly makes some interesting overtures about the Red Wings and Canucks being trade partners (they are), and that GM Patrik Allvin could end-up blowing it all up for a potential rebuild. If they pursue that path, Yzerman should attempt to take advantage of the team that should be selling their best assets in order to rebuild.

Not only was J.T. Miller part of the trade rumors and would be moved to New York in order to quell the disruption in the locker room, but Pettersson was as well.

Pettersson has seven years left on his massive $92.8 million contract, and struggled to replicate his 89 point, 2023-2024 season.

This season he scored a total of 45 points (15 goals, 30 assists) and a fresh start wouldn't be a bad option, should the Canucks enter rebuild territory.

The Red Wings would be able to offer some meaningful prospects and assets in return for Elias Pettersson, the only question is does GM Steve Yzerman want to pay that price?
