The goalie situation in Detroit isn't final, even with the addition of Petr Mrazek, Steve Yzerman could be busy, as one Red Wings goalie is hitting free agency, Alex Lyon.
The Detroit Red Wings could work the goalie market this postseason, as the situation in the net isn't finalized. They utilized three goalies this year:
Alex Lyon, Cam Talbot, and Petr Mrazek near the end of the regular season.
However, it wasn't coming up all roses, as the Red Wings finished 22nd of 32 in terms of team save percentage. The result? The team fired Goalie Coach Alex Westlund and will seek to refresh the ranks in the crease.
That could involve a move during free agency, as Alex Lyon is a pending UFA and hasn't been re-signed, giving the Red Wings a spot in the lineup to backfill.
With Lyon gone, and Mrazek back in the winged wheel, could Steve Yzerman work the market and trade Talbot, while not a disappointment, hasn't been a revelation in the net either?
NHL Insider Jake Tye of The Hockey News believes that the Red Wings should make a move for
Stuart Skinner.
Though that seems like it could turn into a Faustian bargain, when other UFAs are available.
Jake Allen,
Ilya Samsonov, and Vitek Vanacek are other goalie UFAs who would be more suitable and reliable options if we were the ones making a move this July.
Though you'd need to upgrade the defense in front of Ilya Samsonov to give him a chance to be the best goalie he can be nightly, much like Stuart Skinner.
