Steve Yzerman may be making a mistake, as he is expected to send Detroit Red Wings prospect Michael Brandsegg-Nygard back to the AHL.
The Red Wings are set to make an unexpected decision to send prospect Michael Brandsegg-Nygard back to the American Hockey League.
Red Wings reporter Ansar Khan reported that he expected Nygard to be sent down Monday or Tuesday to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
In that nine-game stint so far, he's scored his first NHL point, an assist (1A), and has proven himself capable of handling the responsibilities of being a third-liner, next to center J.T. Compher.
Formerly a 15th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, he has spent a limited amount of time in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins, and that was after his season in the SHL with Skelleftea AIK concluded.
The Detroit Red Wings to Send Michael Brandsegg-Nygard to the AHL
If the Red Wings do decide to send him back to the Grand Rapids Griffins, maybe it is about playing time.
As he could see more utilization in the minor leagues, gaining experience and developing as they expect him to.
With only 11 games of professional hockey (both in the AHL and NHL), it is unreasonable to think this is part of the reason why Yzerman is considering sending him down.
If his scouting reports are any indication:
Mike Morreale-NHL.com-June 11th: "Born in Norway, Brandsegg-Nygard (6-1, 207) plays in Allsvenskan, Sweden's second division, and is a hard-working two-way player with good first-step quickness, decision-making, and vision."
They want him to play to his full potential, especially after spending a 1st-round pick on the Norwegian-born forward.
