The team made a push to come back in the game and win after allowing a 4-2 lead to the Devils but couldn't do enough, giving out too many "freebies" to their opponent earlier in the game, which is what cost the Wings the win, according to head coach Todd McLellan.
Here's what he said in his post-game comments:
"There's probably going to be a lot of talk about what we didn't get or didn't find down the stretch, but in my opinion, it's what we gave up. There was too much free, especially early in the game.
The freebies, they're killers at the end of the night. If a team really earns it and has done what it needs to do, you have to live with that and move on. But, yeah ...."
But in New Jersey, that's not the biggest story of the night.
Devils Fans Call Out Ben Chiarot For Dirty Move On Young Defenseman Simon Nemec During Scrum
With a few minutes left in the third period, a scrum emerged near the Devils' net.
When that occurred, Chiarot speared Simon Nemec with the butt-end of his stick to momentarily take him out of the game.
That move was as dirty as it can get, and Devils fans are now calling on the NHL to take action against Chiarot.
