The Detroit Red Wings are reportedly mishandling veteran Patrick Kane

The Detroit Red Wings are reportedly making a poor decision involving Patrick Kane as the team keeps failing to make it to the playoffs.
With many young and talented players on the team, one could guess that veteran leaders like Patrick Kane could be exactly what the Detroit Red Wings need to get to the next step of their rebuild.
However, for the past two seasons, despite Kane scoring nearly at a point-per-game rate, the team failed to meet expectations.
According to Frank Seravalli, that can be explained by Steve Yzerman's decision to go after players like Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrick Kane. While both are talented players, they aren't the ones to do all the work in the regular season and bring the team to the playoffs:
"Kane and [Vladimir] Tarasenko. They're nice pieces, but those are final pieces of the puzzle that you stamp in there to help get a team from the conference final to winning a Stanley Cup. They are not «drive you through the regular season and wedge you into the playoffs» players."
In other words, Kane is a cherry you put on top of the already tasty sundae to make it even better.
Yzerman made a mistake here: he tried to skip steps, and it seems he could make the same mistake all over again.
Despite Detroit's needs to bolster their defensive unit, Yzerman still plans on bringing Kane back next season, per Darren Dreger:
"I believe that the Red Wings would like to extend Patrick Kane, feels like they'll probably get something done." - Darren Dreger

Signing Kane could end up being a smart move for Yzerman if he also does something about the abysmal blue line.
