GM GM Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings will have a shot at a top pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, which will take place in Los Angeles.

This NHL Draft will be unlike any others as GM Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings will remain on home turf to make their selections.
But the question remains for a team that finished 12th from the bottom of the standings. What position will GM Steve Yzerman be able to draft in during the first round? What are their odds for a lottery pick this season?
According to the website Tankathon:
They have only a 5.1 percent chance of winning next month's draft lottery, according to tankathon, com, but if it happens, they will select second.

Those kinds of odds don't bode well for teams, who like the Blackhawks in the 2023 Drafted Connor Bedard 1st overall, with odds of winning the lottery of 11.5%.
The Blackhawks would get their man and have the foundation piece for their rebuild set for life.

What if the Red Wings Win?

If the Red Wings do end up winning the lottery and having a shot at selecting Michael Misa or Matthew Schaefer, they'd be picking 2nd overall.
As it stands now, the team has an 85.7% chance of selecting 12th overall, and an 8.9 % chance at spot #13 in the Draft, according to Mlive.com.
They also have a miniscule chance of picking third or fourth (0.1 percent).

A harrowing fact to consider in all of this is that since 2017, when the team does get a shot at winning the lottery, they've never been able to move up in the draft.
They did have a shot at drafting 1st overall in 2020, but would drop to fourth and select Lucas Raymond, dropping from fourth to sixth in 2019 to pick Moritz Seider.
Other depth players who were added as a result of the team failing to pick inside the top-four: Filip Zadina (2018), and Michael Rasmussen (2017).
The Red Wings' own misfortune is a product of their own creation, and draft lottery rules that seem esoteric at times.
The Chicago Blackhawks (13.5%) and San Jose Sharks (25.5%) will have better odds at selecting Michael Misa or Matthew Schaefer in late June this year.
