The Detroit Red Wings are a team that holds 11 NHL championships, and a storybook of legends who have worn the Captain's "C" and it includes Steve Yzerman, Henrik Zetterberg, and Dylan Larkin, who remains the best out of all ten?
The
Red Wings are one of the oldest institutions in the NHL and have won 11 Stanley Cup championships. In that time frame, they've had a massive amount of talent go in and out of the team.
For a team that hadn't found their true identity (Detroit Cougars in 1926) and (Detroit Falcons (1930-32), they would be given their iconic logo and name when James Norris bought the team.
Here are the Top Ten Captains by our measure:
Art Duncan played for the then-Cougars in 1926 and served as the team captain, coach, and general manager. Duncan would make a name for himself by being the first Captain of the Victoria Cougar, and would only hold the position for a year after giving them a purpose.
Young was a star defenseman for the Red Wings who held the captaincy in 1935. He'd lead the team to a Stanley Cup in 1936. He'd miss most of 1937 and would remain captain until 1938.
Goodfellow held the "C" from 1934-35 and 1938-41. In addition to being the Red Wings' first captain, he won the Hart Trophy in 1940 and was a star. He'd play as a Red Wing from 1929-41.
Zetterberg was a protege of Steve Yzerman, which might explain his rise to the captaincy for the Wings. He learned from the best, and he'd also learn leadership from defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. Zetteberg would remain Captain until 2018. The most impressive feat of his off-ice? Handling the ego of Mike Babcock.
Howe was named Captain of the Red Wings on June 12th, 1958, by Jack Adams. Adams had a philosophy of a rotating "C" and Howe would earn an extra salary and serve from 1958-62. Adam's tenure ripped through the former Stanley Cup championship roster, and Howe, in his first year, wouldn't lead the team to the playoffs.
Delvecchio would wear the "C" from 1962-1974, second only to Yzerman's tenure with the Red Wings. He'd eventually retire and become the Head Coach of the Red Wings in 1974. During his first three years as coach, he'd led the team to the Stanley Cup finals.
Abel was a Captain who would lead the Red Wings to three Stanley Cup victories in the NHL. He'd serve as Captain from 1942-43, and would leave to join the Royal Canadian Air Force, and wouldn't rejoin the Red Wings until 1946, a year after WWII had ended. Abel would captain the team from 1951-52 and would come away with two Stanley Cups in '50 and '52.
Lidstrom would take the reins after Yzerman and would become the first European-born captain who was trained by his Stanley Cup-winning team. Lidstrom would serve from 2006-12.
Lindsy was a part of Jack Adams' Captaincy rotation on October 6th, 1952.
As Captain, Lindsay served as the go-between for the players and officials during those years and had a deep mistrust of NHL referees (who can blame him).
"I'm still no candidate for the Lady Byng Award," he said. "My ambition is to be as much an inspiration to the players as Sid Abel was."
Lindsay would lead the Wings to multiple Championships in '54 & '55 and would be stripped of the C in '56 when he tried to form a union for NHL players. He'd later be shipped to Chicago for his "sins".
Yzerman's a peculiar topic, considering he started his career in Detroit as a shy teenager, to a reserved leader who found the will to secure the Stanley Cup in 1997. He'd earn the "C" when Jacques Demers brought a jersey to him with the patch on October 7th, 1986, at Oak Park Arena.
He'd lead the
Red Wings to three Stanley Cups and would retire in 2006, after 19 seasons in the NHL.
