As the Detroit Red Wings look to upgrade their forward core, a trade with the Dallas Stars could come to fruition.
The Dallas Stars are in a bit of a bind with their salary cap space. With a team in win-now mode, this is a common restraint they have to deal with year-to-year. And one player who has been a superstar in the lineup might be the odd man out if he doesn't have a contract extension signed soon.
We discussed the rift revealed between Jason Robertson and the Stars earlier in the year. It sounds like the situation hasn't gotten better.
Forward Jason Robertson, who has scored 27 goals in 48 games this season, may end up being a trade chip for the Dallas Stars if nothing significant happens. Per Puckpedia, they have $3.267 million in cap space at the moment.
The portents for the team and Robertson don't look good.
What is the future of Jason Robertson with the Dallas Stars, and what will it cost the Detroit Red Wings?
With the Detroit Red Wings' forward core needing reinforcement, a trade could come to fruition. There could be a future trade in store between both teams, as the Red Wings are one of 5 teams linked to Jason Robertson.
Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet said,
"If Robertson holds strong on his asking price and wants more on a new contract with Dallas than Mikko Rantanen's $12 million, then the Stars may eventually explore trading their top goal scorer, but they'd need a big scoring replacement. Already missing Tyler Seguin, a Robertson trade would require a significant player in return."
And the Bleacher Report's Lyle Richardson has linked Robertson to the Detroit Red Wings in a list of 5 teams that could hold interest in him.
"Let's look at five teams proposed by Lyle Richardson in Bleacher Report that could be potential trade destinations for Robertson, if GM Jim Nill decides to go that route-whether at the deadline or in the summer.
Carolina Hurricanes
Detroit Red Wings
Los Angeles Kings
New York Rangers
Toronto Maple Leafs"

While we anticipate the Red Wings making a move sooner than this, it could happen in the summer. When free agency hits in July, it could become the opportune time for the team to take advantage of a Dallas Stars cap crunch situation.
However, a trade means a deal happens sooner, and prospects fly out the window quicker. Which could be a likely scenario depending on what Steve Yzerman is willing to pay in March compared to July.
Their deadline cap space is projected to be $59 million, which could fit Robertson's new deal under their ceiling easily.
We know the cost of how much the Detroit Red Wings will be paying if GM Steve Yzerman makes a trade. But will it be worth it?
Another 80-point forward sounds like evening the odds of a deep playoff series run.
