The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Erik Gustafsson ahead of the game against the San Jose Sharks due to a veteran going down with an injury.

On Thursday, January 16th, the Detroit Red Wings will defend Little Caesars Arena against the San Jose Sharks. But they'll be short one blueliner, Ben Chiarot.
It was reported today by the Detroit Free Press' Helene St. James that the defenseman had suffered an injury. Now, general manager Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings will have to dip into their cache of talent in the AHL to stop the bleeding.

There's been no update on what ails Ben Chiarot at the moment, but Gustafsson will have to step in and play solid hockey to help continue the push for the playoffs this year.
Gustafsson was pushed out of his spot early in the season due to the excellent play of rookie blueliner Axel-Sandin Pellikka.
ASP took advantage of his opportunity quickly and scored his first NHL goal against the Lightning in October.
He found a new home in the AHL after playing the majority of 2024-25 as a Red Wing (60 games, 18 points). This year, he's played 22 games in the AHL and scored 20 points (2-18) and 1 game in the NHL.
We don't know where he could slot into the lineup, but as the team continues to be plagued with injuries, it could be a short-term assignment.
Gustafsson was assigned to the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins in November. This could be a chance for him to showcase himself ahead of the trade deadline.
