Official decision by the Anaheim Ducks on Mason McTavish in the midst of trade talks: It's now over
Not even Steve Yzerman's connection in Anaheim with Pat Verbeek can save him as the Detroit Red Wings have missed out on another forward in Mason McTavish, who is staying with the Ducks.
The Detroit Red Wings desperately need help on the top six. Yzerman would make the decision to move off of
Vladimir Tarasenko in hopes of finding an answer in free agency, but wouldn't pull the trigger on a forward at all.
Of course, he'd re-sign
Patrick Kane. However, in terms of free agency, the biggest addition was
John Gibson. And now, it appears he won't be able to take a shot at center
Mason McTavish.
The former 3rd overall pick in 2021, who scored 52 points (22-30) in Anaheim last season, will be staying put according to recent reports according to Marco D'amico of BPM Sports.
Trade rumors can now be put to rest.
Detroit Red Wings miss out on Mason McTavish
That means for the Red Wings, it's back to the drawing board. As far as we know, trading season isn't over despite the fact that
McTavish isn't on the trade market.
Steve Yzerman will have to exercise other options available to him or promote someone from the AHL after training camp.
In the meantime, it's just another missed opportunity for Yzerman, as he's failed to produce a contract with a forward who can produce at the level of a superstar, or even top-six forward.
Mason McTavish and Pat Verbeek will discuss details further in regards to his new deal. McTavish wants term, while Verbeek wants a bridge per The Hockey News.
