The Detroit Red Wings and Steve Yzerman could improve the blue line by acquiring Wyatt Kaiser from the Chicago Blackhawks.

In an intriguing trade proposal, Todd Matthews of Octopus Thrower has revealed a scenario where the Detroit Red Wings improve their blue line.
The Red Wings would acquire prospect Wyatt Kaiser from the Blackhawks, who, at this point in his career, is being blocked by other players on the team.
Instead of playing in the NHL, he's been blocked by aging veterans and other upcoming talent.
Last season, he played 17 games in the AHL with the IceHogs and 57 in the NHL with the Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks and the restricted free agent haven't come to terms on a deal, and this could be Yzerman's chance to improve the blue line.
«If that holdout persists, why shouldn't Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman inquire?,» Matthews wrote. «One look at the Blackhawks blueliners, and they got cornerstones like Alex Vlasic and Artyom Levshunov. Plus, Sam Rinzel, Kevin Korchinski, and Nolan Allan under contract. Not to mention, Connor Murphy's the veteran presence tasked with leading the kids

«Kaiser's heading into his age-23 season, and he's not going to produce like Axel Sandin-Pellikka eventually will,» Matthews added. «Heck, he may not even hit Simon Edvinsson levels. But his puck-moving ability's something the Wings can use, even if he's primarily only playing between 17 and 18 minutes per game.»

Wyatt Kaiser's Role In Detroit Could be Key

Kaiser is 23 and just now hitting his prime as a shutdown defenseman in the NHL.
The defenseman could be utilized on the penalty kill and isn't afraid to sacrifice his body to block shots.
He would fit the Red Wings timeline, as the rebuild is still ongoing.
It'd be a real chance at playing in the NHL for him, as the Blackhawks' blue line is deep.
The Red Wings would only have to give up Erik Gustafsson and a 2nd-round pick for Kaiser, who's a shutdown defenseman and is projected for a spot in the second or third pair in the NHL.
