Longtime legendary hockey referee of 28 years has sadly passed away at age 52
We have tragic news to report, as 1,100-game QMJHL referee Nicolas Dutil passed away at the age of 52.
Nicolas Dutil has passed away, according to hockey journalist Mikael Lalancette, at the age of 52.
Dutil was a referee in the QMJHL, a career that he has held for the last 28 years, refereeing a total of 1,178 games in the Q.
Dutil broke the 1000-game milestone during the 2018 QMJHL season, an epic milestone for anyone who's dedicated their lives to the game of hockey. His family was present during the occasion.
Sad news in the world of hockey: former referee Nicolas Dutil died this morning at the age of 52.
He was an official in the QMJHL for 28 years.

QMJHL issues a statement on the passing of Nicolas Dutil
The QMJHL would issue a statement in regard to the massive loss the hockey community in Quebec has experienced:
"The big QMJHL family is saddened to learn of the death of Nicolas Dutil, one of the greatest referees in the history of the league. We offer our sympathies to his family as well as his loved ones', the organization wrote on social media.
It was reported on TVA Sports that Dutil has missed several months of action due to his battle with cancer.
The cause of death has been undisclosed at this point in time.
Dutil holds the record for most QMJHL games officiated at 242.
We send our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Dutil.
