The Detroit Red Wings are parting ways with a 32-year old goaltender
He went on to play 74 games, nearly double his pre-Detroit NHL total of 39 and more than any other Red Wings goaltender during that span.
Now 32, Lyon's time with Detroit is likely nearing its end.
The acquisition of
Petr Mrazek at the trade deadline signaled a shift, with general manager Steve Yzerman bolstering the goaltending roster.
«It was tough at first, but as a professional, you learn to push through mentally,» Lyon said. «I've been the third goalie my whole career. It's just part of the job.»
With
Cameron Talbot ($2.5 million) and Mrazek ($4.25 million) signed for 2025-26, and top prospect
Sebastian Cossa nearing NHL readiness after three pro seasons, including two with the
Grand Rapids Griffins, Lyon is bracing for free agency on July 1st.
«I'll see where things lead. A lot is out of my control,» Lyon said. «Detroit's a great place to play, and I loved being at Little Caesars Arena.»
Lyon's performance-35-27-6, 3.09 GAA, .901 save percentage over two seasons with a non-playoff team-should draw interest in the free-agent market.
«I'm grateful for two years as a full-time NHL player and want to stay in the league,» Lyon said. I need to keep improving and get more consistent. I wish I could've done more to get us to the playoffs. Now, I just keep moving forward and grinding.»
Having played for four NHL teams and three AHL clubs over nine pro seasons, Lyon remains driven.
«I'm nowhere near satisfied,» he said. «I feel like a hungry 24-year-old. I want to keep getting better and achieve more in this league. These two years just fuel me to want more.»
He added, «The NHL is hard to reach and even harder to stay in. You can't take it for granted.»
