The Detroit Red Wings' Steve Yzerman made a bold move during the offseason in acquiring John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks, as his trade of Petr Mrazek has given the team a better shot at the playoffs in 2025-26.

On July 1st, 2025, the Detroit Red Wings traded Petr Mrazek to the Anaheim Ducks for John Gibson.
In return, the Ducks received Petr Mrazek and two draft picks. The move was genius because it was an easy upgrade to the Red Wings' goaltending situation, and Yzerman made the smart move of weaponizing the Ducks' cap in order to secure the veteran goalie.
Gibson, who had been a steady hand behind a terrible Ducks team. He had a .912 save percentage this season, behind one of the worst in the league.
While Mrazek had proven to be as inconsistent as those in the net before him (Cam Talbot, Alex Lyon, and James Reimer) would be sent to Anaheim to get a fresh start.

Red Wings find their starting goaltender in John Gibson via trade from the Anaheim Ducks

Gibson will be able to take on the responsibility of being a starter in Detroit and give the team a shot at the playoffs in 2025-26, where they were just shy of a wild-card spot in 2024-25.
Mrazek held steady in Chicago, but his latest production, a mere .890 save percentage, wouldn't have been able to provide the consistency to stabilize Detroit in the crease.
Gibson makes $6.4 million AAV and will now be the starter in Detroit, after the spot had been up for grabs before his arrival in Hockeytown.
Before Gibson arrived in Detroit, he played all 12 years of his NHL career in Anaheim.
