A trade completed between the Detroit Red Wings and the Ottawa Senators was confirmed to be the best of Steve Yzerman as General Manager.

After a short stint that didn't lead to the expected results with the Ottawa Senators, Alex DeBrincat ended up being traded to the Detroit Red Wings, notably reuniting with his great friend and former Chicago Blackhawks teammate Patrick Kane.
Since then, DeBrincat has played an important role for the Wings. Even though the team failed to make it to the playoffs, it feels like it's closer than ever, and with the DeBrincat trade being a crucial part of it.

Is The DeBrincat Trade Steve Yzerman's Best Move As GM So Far?

Yzerman hasn't been very active on the trade market since he was named GM of the team back in 2019.
The biggest deal in place was Alex DeBrincat's acquisition in 2023. DeBrincat is a forward with enough talent to lead a team to success, although he didn't manage to get to the playoffs since his arrival.
However, over the course of his two seasons with the Wings, he tallied 66 goals and 71 assists, nearly matching Dylan Larkin's point production in the past two years and ending in the top three of Detroit's scorers.

It's safe to say that the Wings got the upper hand on that trade. In order to get DeBrincat from the Sens, Yzerman sent Dominik Kubalik, Donovan Sebrango, and two draft picks.
While one of those picks ended up being used to acquire Linus Ullmark, both Kubalik and Sebrango had very limited impact on the team.
Kubalik moved to Europe, Sebrango played in only two NHL games, and the pick was used to draft Javon Moore, who's been in the USHL ever since.
DeBrincat's impact in Detroit is much bigger than the whole return ever had for the Senators.
With two seasons left on his contract with the Wings, fans are eager to see if the team will be able to return to the playoffs. If they can, and DeBrincat plays a key role in the team's success, he could be in a great position to ask for a significant raise to Yzerman.
