A major development debunked the rumors sending Kyle Connor to the Detroit Red Wings, as he is expected to sign a contract extension with the Winnipeg Jets.
The 2026 free agent class will be a stacked one.
Many star players are entering the final year of their contracts, and with the rise in the NHL salary cap, debates will go on all season long until a deal is announced.
Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel, Lane Hutson, and Kyle Connor will be among the names to watch, especially for fans of a team with a lot of cap space like the Red Wings.
Kyle Connor Extension Incoming?
McDavid and Connor have both been linked to the Detroit Red Wings at some point in the discussions.
But both the Oilers and the Jets will want to lock them down as soon as possible, meaning the Wings could find themselves in the same position as last offseason, where they couldn't put their hands on top free agents.
In a recent radio intervention, Jets broadcaster Jamie Thomas stated that the Jets are confident they'll sign Connor, even for a salary as high as $12M a year.
"Ok, so last time I talked to you, I felt it was $9 or $10 million, at least. Now we're talking twelve. I don't think there's any danger of him not signing, for sure. And where the cap is going, fine, I get it if it's $12 million.

Most analysts don't think Connor will even get to the market. Fortunately, other players of his caliber will be available, such as Jason Robertson, Kirill Kaprizov, Patrik Laine, Artemi Panarin, and many more.
