A veteran of the Detroit Red Wings organization has been nominated by the NHL for a prestigious award
A Detroit Red Wings veteran defenseman has been nominated for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy by the NHL, and the last member of the organization to win was Henrik Zetterberg in 2015.
Jeff Petry has been nominated for the NHL's King Clancy Memorial Trophy, in which goes to the best leader on and off the ice.
This is quite the controversial decision by the NHL, and it may highlight the lack of effectiveness Captain Dylan Larkin has on his Red Wings group.
For a trophy delivered to the best leader, and for it to not be your captain is certainly going to raise questions.
"The King Clancy Memorial Trophy is an annual award given "to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community."
The winner is selected by a committee consisting of Commissioner Gary Bettman and former winners of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy as well as the NHL Foundation Player Award.
The trophy was presented to the NHL by the Board of Governors in 1988 to honor the late Francis M. "King" Clancy, a former Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs player, as well as an NHL referee, coach and general manager.
Clancy was part of Toronto's first Stanley Cup-winning team in 1932, as well as one of the participants in the Ace Bailey benefit game, which was the first NHL All-Star Game. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958."
