The Detroit Red Wings and Steve Yzerman could use a 102-point forward like the Toronto Maple Leafs'[ Mitch Marner in the lineup, as it appears the Wings are still in the hunt for the pending UFA.
Depending on what NHL Insiders you follow, you'd know that
Mitch Marner wants to sign with a contending team in the NHL. Some of those teams have been mentioned, such as the Florida Panthers or the Vegas Golden Knights.
However, that won't stop GM Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings, who is willing to work his magic in order to sign the 102-point forward.
The Red Wings have $21.3 million cap space readily available to sign a top-six winger like Marner.
Marner is one of the key pieces in this year's free agency, as no one expected him to walk away from Toronto, a dream destroyed.
Now, he'll go cup hunting elsewhere, and it will be below the Canadian border. If Marner were to sign with Detroit, he'd be 3 1/2 hours away from his hometown, Markham, Ontario.
That is compared to a team on the West Coast, like Vegas, or the Southeast, like Florida. While Utah or Anaheim have the promises of a bigger payday, he could jump right in and make an immediate impact in Detroit and could find himself back in the playoffs, with Todd McLellan at the helm.
According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, Marner wants to move on from Toronto.
Friedman describe the move as being a "clean break" for Marner as he would be able to start new somewhere far away from the craziness of his home city. This may make things difficult for the Red Wings to overcome, but there are still contenders inside the East.
The Red Wings will not only have to meet his monetary demands, but also sell him on the future of the team as a playoff contender. Though arguably, they're still lacking a true #1 goalie and a solid blue line.
The good news for the Red Wings is, Marner may want a short-term deal, just in case he wants to find something better elsewhere down the road.
The Red Wings' prospect pipeline is a good as any we've seen in the NHL, if not better, and could give him a reason to stay longer, if Yzerman can convince him too.
But for now, free agency is a waiting game for us all.
