Forward Isaac Howard, who was taken with the 31st selection in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft by the divisional foe Tampa Bay Lightning, is unlikely to sign a contract with the franchise per GM Julien BriseBois.
When I chatted with Isaac, he was pretty candid, and I appreciated his honesty, and I thank him for his honesty. He values the opportunity to choose the club that he believes is the best fit for him. And I won't speak for him, but he values that. Right now, I would say it's unlikely that we will sign him.
During a recent '32 Thoughts' podcast, top NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman said that things broke down between Howard and the Lightning over being unable to agree on a specific career path.
I think the Lightning know that the odds are now against them and that he probably is not going to be part of their organization, but nobody said anything bad about him. Basically, what I was told, because nobody really wanted to get into mud slinging, they just didn't see eye to eye. ... Whatever the path Howard saw and the path the Lightning saw, it didn't line up.
Howard, who has also played for the University of Minnesota-Duluth, scored 52 points (26G, 26A) in 37 games with the Spartans this year.
If Howard forgoes signing with the Lightning and enters free agency in 2026, the Lightning would receive a compensatory 2nd round pick from whomever signs him.
