Red Wings rookie forward Marco Kasper, who enjoyed his 1st (almost) full year in the NHL, is the latest player to confirm he's heading overseas for the IIHF World Championship.
The Red Wings got what they were looking for out of rookie Marco Kasper in 2024-25, especially after the Christmas break when new head coach Todd McLellan arrived back in town to replace the terminated Derek Lalonde.
He finished with 37 points (19G, 18A) in 77 games while mostly centering the 2nd line with Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane. Considering that Kane and the Red Wings have both expressed mutual interest in a new contract, that line could very well remain intact moving into next season.
But while the Red Wings unfortunately missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Kasper isn't done playing hockey just yet. He's confirmed he's heading overseas to represent Austria in the 2025 IIHF World Championships.
Kasper made it clear after the coaching change that the team practiced with more intensity, which helped his own confidence.
I think a lot is just confidence, but also confidence on both sides of the puck. I'm trying to play a 200-foot game, getting out there, doing the right things, battle hard.
I think we battled harder and with a bit more intensity in practices (under McLellan). I think that's good, I think is a good part for me and for the team. Just get out there and get ready for those games.
Kasper is part of the next wave of young Red Wings talent that GM Steve Yzerman is banking on carrying the club that he's overseen since April 2019 to the next level.
