The Detroit Red Wings are in the firing line, as Sportsnet let GM Steve Yzerman have it in a column that detailed his failure, even with adding talent like Alex DeBrincat to the lineup, is a separation between himself and the team a possibility?

Unlike the Pistons (made the playoffs) , Lions (NFC Championship in 2023) and Tigers (playoffs in 2024) the Red Wings are a part of the Detroit resurgence.
The blame for the team's lack of success should be shouldered by both the players, and the GM who has failed to build a team which can make the playoffs. Last season they missed the playoffs after a tiebreaker, and now they couldn't even clinch a wild card spot.
Sportsnet's Josh Beneteau gives GM Steve Yzerman's performance a scathing review. Should GM Steve Yzerman be fired? Let's take a look.

Yzerplan or Yzerbust?

Yzerman made a whopping 50 draft picks in the last six years as Red Wings GM and has failed to develop any of them aside from one who has made the team. During this time frame, they've only been able to select a draft pick once inside the top-five, which yielded Lucas Raymond.
Raymond has been a key piece in the Red Wings' lineup, scoring 70+ points this season.
During GM Steve Yzerman's tenure, he's failed to secure a pick that would yield a superstar in the NHL, like the Blackhawks have with Connor Bedard.
Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat, and Lucas Raymond have failed to perform up to the task, which would push the team into the playoffs compared to other teams' cores, as they're ranked 28th in points in the NHL, with 75.
While he's tried to add meaningful depth in the forward core, players don't play as they're expected and drag the team down, with J.T. Compher 31 points in 73 games, Vladimir Tarasenko 31 points in 77 games, and Andrew Copp 23 points in 56 games.
These veteran forwards have failed to achieve what they were hired to do, and their contracts come with some form of no-trade clause.
This'll make things difficult for Yzerman to move on from the players when the time comes.
Detroit's defense has been monstrous, as they're ranked 16th in goals allowed, and 69.5 PK, which is horrendous.
Veterans like Justin Holl, Jeff Petry, Erik Gustafsson, and Ben Chiarot have hurt the group, with their lack of leadership and consistent play in the defensive core. It's time to make a way for the youth movement.
Not to mention, the team's lack of consistent goaltending, of which only Cam Talbot (.905 ) remains about a .900 percentage, while Alex Lyon, and Petr Mrazek
The team has finished without a spot in the playoffs for the ninth season, and if there was any time to push back on Yzerman's tenure, it should be now. They're 6th in the Atlantic with a record of 37-35-7 and couldn't secure a wild card spot this season.

The Way Forward

With $22.2 million in projected cap space available, GM Steve Yzerman should do the right thing and get rid of the veterans and spend money on top-tier talent. That being said, forward Patrick Kane should be one they keep around, considering he's fourth on the team in scoring.
Yzerman built a mediocre squad, and there needs to be questions about his vision of the team for the future and whether it aligns with ownership's goals.
