Detroit Red Wings top prospect Jesse Kiiskinen signs a new deal, will not join the NHL club
Jesse Kiiskinen, a promising forward in the Detroit Red Wings prospect pipeline, has recently signed an entry level contract with the organization, but won't be joining the team anytime soon.
The 19-year-old Fin, whose NHL rights were acquired from the Nashville Predators last year, has signed a deal for one more season with HPK Hameenlinna in Finland's SM-liiga.
«He had a good season in HPK, and we expect him to have another strong season,» said Dan Cleary, Red Wings director of player development. «Then we'll see him in North America next year.»
In a recent statement, Kiiskinen revealed that he believes he can be one of the best players in the NHL.
Since Kiiskinen isn't playing for the Red Wings in the NHL, his contract will be deemed 'on loan' back to HPK to complete his contract.
This is the same exact situation as a fellow Red Wings prospect Anton Johansson, who will play for Leksand IF in Sweden's SHL this season due to his European contract obligations, despite expectations to make a strong push for the NHL roster.
Kiiskinen recounts the call he received after being traded to the Red Wings
When Kiiskinen received word he'd been traded to the Detroit Red Wings, it was during his military service:
