Detroit Red Wings' 69.4% Penalty Kill: Second-Worst in NHL History Explained
The Detroit Red Wings are making NHL history, but it's not something to cheer about.
Their penalty kill this season is at 69.4%, the second-worst mark ever in the league.
For fans, it's tough to watch a team with such a proud past struggle so badly, especially with a poor product on the ice that general manager Steve Yzerman has put out there.
The average penalty kill in the NHL is at about 80%.
Only the 1979-80 Los Angeles Kings were worse, with a 68.2% penalty kill. That's the record Detroit is chasing, and not in a good way.
Red Wings lose to Golden Knights on the penalty kill
This season, the Red Wings have had trouble all over the ice when shorthanded, but surprisingly have pulled together their powerplay, which is second best in the NHL.
Fans are now stuck watching a team that can't stop anyone with an extra player. Coach Todd McLellan has tried changing things up, but nothing's worked yet.
With a 69.4% penalty kill, the Red Wings are in the history books for all the wrong reasons.
They've got time to turn it around, but right now, it's a rough time to be a fan in Detroit.
