One of the NHL's biggest and most successful enforcers announces a surprise retirement will take place at the end of the current NHL 2024-25 season

14-year NHL veteran Pat Maroon has announced that he will retire after a long and successful career on Saturday.
Moments before the Chicago Blackhawks faced off against the St. Louis Blues for an early afternoon matchup, he broke the news while on live TV in an interview with analyst Darren Pang.
"Sometimes you've got to give up everything you know and everything you dreamed of your whole life," Maroon said. "I just know it's time for me, time for my family to start a new chapter in our lives."

Maroon seemingly purposely waited to make the announcement until he faced off against the St. Louis Blues, the organization where he won his first Stanley Cup with back in 2019.

"I'm just going to finish this year like every game is my last game, you know, I'm going to play as hard as I can," he said

Maroon is a 36-year old veteran who has been around since being drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers, 161st overall, in the 2007 NHL season.

He only got his first shot in the NHL 4 years later, where he debuted with the Anaheim Ducks.

Spending five seasons with the Anaheim Ducks than being dealt to the Edmonton Oilers, Maroon ultimately made the right decision when signing with the St. Louis Blues following the 2018 season.

Pat Maroon's historic career

After signing with the Blues, the magic happened.

Maroon went to win a 2019 Stanley Cup with the Blues, and then hoisted the beloved trophy twice in 2020 and 2021 with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

He was the first player in league history to win three straight Stanley Cups since the historic run of the New York Islanders in 1980-1983.

Throughout a total of 839 games played, Maroon recorded 125 goals, 195 assist which marked up to 320 points. Not terrible for a 4th line player who averaged 13:10
of ice time throughout that large lump sum of games.

Maroon finished off the interview with a saddened, but emotional goodbye.

"This is all I know... it's tough. It's hard to go through these things, you can't really process it," Maroon stated.

Happy retirement Pat, and enjoy the endless off-seasons!
