The Detroit Red Wings need to stick by the notion "defense wins championships," and Steve Yzerman could find a suitable addition from their original-six rivals, the Chicago Blackhawks, in Ohio-born defenseman Connor Murphy, but what are the costs?
The Detroit Red Wings' blueline needs a facelift. It's been practically shallow as far as depth has gone the past two seasons, with only
Moritz Seider and
Simon Edvinsson being the only reliable pairing on the ice; they'll need to add more talent.
That talent could come from the Chicago Blackhawks, who have players they could part ways with in order to acquire more assets or prospects.
The defenseman?
Connor Murphy, a 745-game NHL veteran who has spent the majority of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks, whom he joined in 2017-18.
Heavy.com proposed an interesting and affordable trade for the veteran. It'd require the Red Wings sacrificing only a draft pick for the defenseman, which should only sting a little, considering how deep the Wings' prospect pool is.

The Blackhawks are revving up their engines as the turnover continues, the youth movement will continue their promotion in the NHL, one by one, with
Sam Rinzel,
Artyom Levshunov, and other prospects on the way.
This could result in them parting ways with veterans as jobs become open, or they lose them in training camp.
Murphy is a hard-nosed defenseman with some offensive upside, and could be an impact player in the Red Wings' blueline, which has missed someone of Murphy's stature lately.
He makes $4.4 million AAV and has been a stalwart on the Blackhawks' second-pairing, and would make a solid addition to the Wings by any means.
Murphy was drafted 20th overall in 1st-round of the 2011 NHL Entry draft by the Arizona Coyotes.
