Detroit Red Wings acquire intriguing 6-foot-7 defenseman and it's a home run for Steve Yzerman
The Detroit Red Wings have acquired the rights to a very intriguing Swedish defenseman, Carl-Otto Magnusson.
If there is one thing that is certain, it's the Detroit Red Wings being heavy on Swedish hockey players.
Ever since the team has found success in players like Henrik Zetterberg and Nicklas Lidstrom, the Wings aren't giving up on it. Their latest object of desire comes from the QMJHL by way of the SHL, Carl Otto-Magnusson.
According to a report from agent Randy Edmonds, the Detroit Red Wings have invited the defensive prospect out to the Red Wings' training camp and now currently hold his rights.
Detroit Red Wings make an intriguing camp invite
The most recent transaction saw him make the jump to the CHL from Frolunda in the SHL after the summer draft.
With the Wildcats taking notice, it appears that someone has tipped Steve Yzerman off on this Swede's capabilities, or maybe he's been watching and waiting for something to happen all along.
The Gothenburg-born defenseman has spent the last four years of his career playing in the SHL-Jr leagues with Frolunda and recently suited up for the Swedish team in 2024-25 in the U19 category at the World Juniors.
He'd tally 3 points (1-2) in 7 games with the U19 organization, with 33 PIMs. At 6-foot-7, 223 pounds, it's not a mystery why the team is attempting to get him to show up at training camp.
They hope to add more size to a blueline, which is chock-full of offensive talent but could use some muscle too.
