Alex Lyon can read the way the winds are blowing in Detroit, as his time as a Red Wings' goalie could be at an end, with Lyon commenting today on what could be his last season in Little Caesar's Arena.

Alex Lyon has found a home in the Detroit Red Wings organization thanks to GM Steve Yzerman. He's played two years of solid hockey with the team, where 2023-2024 saw him produce a 3.05 GAA and a .904 save percentage.
Now with the youth movement ongoing in Detroit, he can discern how the team will move in the postseason, and it may be without him.
The last two seasons in Detroit, the goalie made $900K AAV and was a solid backup goalie.

Time's Up?

With the acquisition of Petr Mrazek, his time as a backup is at its end. In spite of all this, he remained humble about his experience in Detroit.
His performance this season wasn't up to par and Mrazek has played better on a lot worse teams, like the 2023-2024 Chicago Blackhawks (3.03 GAA, and a .908 in 2023-2024).
Lyon ended this season with a 2.81 GAA and a .896 save percentage. His agent could use his lower GAA to sell to another NHL squad who needs a backup, but they'll have to hustle if he makes it to free agency without a new contract.
«I'm happy,» Lyon said. «Got to be a full time NHL player for two years.»

After playing in Philadelphia, Florida, and now Detroit, he may have to say goodbye to his first full-time home in the league, a discomforting notion. But he's accepting of it.
«I would like to continue to be in the NHL,» Lyon said. «You just can't take for granted being in the NHL and playing in the NHL

Now, as someone who made his name playing for the Florida Panthers, he'll have to use his past myths in order to secure a future on another roster in the NHL.
Is this a daunting task, or will it be a layup when some NHL squads are desperate for depth in the net?
