The Detroit Red Wings organization is seeking strong acquisitions in all areas this offseason to ensure they become big enough contenders for the 2025/26 NHL season, as they intend to break their nine-year playoff absence.

In the beginning of July, the Detroit Red Wings were confirmed to have completed a phone call involving trade talks surrounding New Jersey Devils' Dougie Hamilton.
These reports began when the Devils' general manager admitted that the organization would need to alleviate cap space, as a major priority for him was to re-sign their defenseman, Luke Hughes.
However, the calendar has now flipped to August, and Hughes has still yet to sign a contract with the Devils. The Devils are now reportedly seeking a deal involving Dougie Hamilton or Ondrej Palat, per Sportsnet's Luke Fox.
"Jersey only has roughly $7 million in cap space, which is why veteran names like Ondrej Palat and Hamilton have surfaced in trade speculation."
This silence has never been so loud, and fans are continuing to speculate that Detroit is inches away from acquiring Hamilton.
Why should Dougie Hamilton come to Detroit?
Although Hamilton still has three years left on his seven-year, $63M deal, the former first-round pick could single-handedly solidify the Red Wings' blue line.
32-year-old Hamilton is a 6-foot-6 defenseman who can add offense alongside his impeccable defensive skills and can play on the second pairing behind Moritz Seider.
Having a one-two punch of Seider and Hamilton could bolster the Red Wings' roster to new dimensions and could bring this regular season team into massive contention.
